So, we witness the blue water of Chilika turning red with the blood of fisher folks; the spill of adivasi blood unto the earth of Kashipur and Kalinganagar for Birals and Tatas; the destruction of Niyamgiri mountain of Dongria Kondh for Vedanta; attacks on the peasants in the plains of Jagatsihgpur for POSCO; threat to the jungle land of adivasis in Keonjher for Arcelor Mittal; diversion of Hirakud dam water to a number of companies leaving the peasants high and dry.

The toll from June 11 has reached 109, with the numbers of injured, maimed, blinded much more. Curfews, bullets, tear smoke have become a routine to suppress the peaceful democratic protests.

Today the Central and Eastern regions of India are witnessing the largest police/paramilitary deployment unprecedented in the history of independent India or even in the days preceding it. All independent sources acknowledge the deployment of around 250,000 paramilitary/police armed to the teeth in these regions while the government comes out with a conservative estimate of around 150,000. This military build up is a calculated assault on the poorest of the poor of the peoples in these regions-the tribals.

Ever since the filing of the chargesheet against Mr. Kobad Ghandy on 19.02.10 before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police a deliberate profiling of the civil rights organisations and other people's organisations as espousing the cause of the CPI (Maoist) is being planted in a section of the media by the investigating agencies. This is ostensibly on the basis of the specific mention of these organisations in the charge sheet.

The manner in which the profiling is intended to vitiate the public space is inimical to any democratic protest/dissent against the policies of the government. It projects ominous portend towards subversion of constitutional freedoms and engraftment of fascist/intolerant polity for the future by muzzling entire space for democratic ex-pression.
